Achieving Sustainable Earth Futures in the Anthropocene by Including Local Communities in Critical Zone Science

Abstract Critical Zone Science (CZS) explores the deep evolution of landscapes from base groundwater or saprolite‐rock interface to top vegetation, zone that supports all terrestrial life. Here we propose a framework for CZS evolve further as discipline, building on 1st generation CZOs in natural systems and 2nd human‐modified systems, incorporate human behaviour more holistic understanding 3rd CZOs. This concept was tested China‐UK CZO programme (2016–2020) established four across China different lithologies. Beyond conventional insights into soil resources, biogeochemical cycling hydrology scales, surveys farmers local government officials led human‐environment interactions key pressures affecting socio‐economic livelihoods farmers. These learnings combined with data identified knowledge exchange (KE) opportunities unravel diverse factors within Land‐Water‐Food Nexus, could directly improve environmental conditions, such reduction fertilizer use, contributing toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) policies. Through two‐way KE, cultural context considerations were readily apparent alongside rationale policy action sustainability farming practices. Seeking solutions understand remediate CZ degradation caused by human‐decision making requires co‐design foregrounds behavior opinions those living modified We show how new transdisciplinary approach sustainable Earth futures can alignment research practical needs communities stressed environments their governments, supporting social‐ecological planetary health agendas improving capacity achieve SDGs.
